Current Trends for Spring/ Summer 2017

Apparently I was incapable of
thinking of ten new trends so
here are the top nine instead!
(Works out really, number
9 is my lucky number.)

1. COLOUR.

Sorbet colours are especially in, particularly yellow, orange and pink.
HOW TO WEAR:
Casual: Stick to one colour to avoid a clashing overload and dress it with “safe” clothing like jeans (white, if you really wanna pop) + “safe” accessories (gold, silver, rose gold etc).
Afraid of colour: Go for a simple, chic outfit (blacks, whites and browns) and add the sorbet trend through your bag, shoes and accessories (sunglasses, earrings, rings, belts, etc, you know the drill).
Go all out: Stick to one colour overall (i.e. a dress or co-ord set) and bump it up by going for an asymmetrical cut. You can either choose simple shoes, bags and jewellery OR go for colours in each by picking a complimentary sorbet colour i.e. pink with a similar blue (by similar blue I mean a sorbet blue with a sorbet pink just as you would match hot pink with electric blue, baby pink with baby blue, bubble gum pink with bubblegum blue, you get the drift).

2. OFF-THE-SHOULDER.

Might just be my favourite trend this summer and yours too, looking at all these Instagram posts!
HOW TO WEAR:
It’s almost impossible to go wrong with this trend. If it’s a tight fitted off-the-shoulder top, match with literally anything – skinny trousers to wide leg trouser; pleated skirts to bodycon midis. This type of off-the-shoulder piece is the most versatile.
If it’s a loose off-the-shoulder top, match with skinny or slim fit trousers but avoid loose pants and skirts so as not to look frumpy.
If it’s an off-the-shoulder dress, ensure that the main body of the dress is either entirely fitted or if there is a flare, ensure that it falls at the waist with anything above the waist well fitted. For a casual lounge look, you could go with something with more slack around the chest but perhaps ensure the waist is still cinched if everything else is loose. You don’t want to look like a walking pillow case.

3. FRILLS.

A small boobied girl’s BFF (aka me, holla). This is especially popular this season with the off-the-shoulder trend!
HOW TO WEAR:
Follow the rules above if the clothing is an off-the-shoulder frilled piece. Otherwise pick pieces where there is a line or two of frilling rather than frill overload. A line or two alone are enough to make the statement, anything more tends to be an overkill (not always, but usually).

4. FLORAL WITH A TWIST.

Floral prints are an obvious for this season BUT statement floral embroidery and patches are what’s poppin’. The house of Gucci has done this trend justice so there’s no wonder why Gucci is everywhere lately.
HOW TO WEAR:
Stick it everywhere! Going out dresses, denim jackets, trainers, bags, accessories, the list goes on! Not really for #freethenipples just yet? Wear a cropped shirt with two embroidered flowers covering each nipple and make your own statement that way.

5. MOM JEANS.

I’m British so writing “mom” vs “mum” is slightly killing me inside (talk about drama). Anyways, mom jeans are making their entrance this season so say goodbye to the boyfriend baggy fit for this season. Loose yet well fitted all at the same time; comfort whilst looking chic.
HOW TO WEAR:
Typically, these jeans look best when worn in a casual outfit. The thumb of rule to avoid looking frumpy is the looser the mom jeans, the more fitted the top should be in order to balance each other out. Overall, form fitted tops are the way to go however loose tops that are cropped can look as equally fab because showing the stomach/midriff area allows a break up between the looseness of the jeans and of the top.

6. DENIM ON DENIM ON DENIM.

A fashion sin has become a fashion must for this season. I’ve always been taught “never wear denim on denim, never” but apparently no f**ks were given this season because that rule has been ignored but I can’t deny it, some are really making this work. Sometimes rules are definitely made to be broken.
HOW TO WEAR:
It’s all about balance. Ensure only one of the denim pieces is baggy and loose fitted whilst the other is fitted to equal the two; a baggy denim jacket with a fitted mini skirt or pair of jeans perhaps? Try to add some detailing that softens it all up such as simple accessories, sleek simple shoes, breaks of skin like the midriff showing and sunglasses. Sunglasses are a must with this because they look so damn chic with these types of outfits!

7. METALLICS.

You either love it or you hate it. You’ve got almost tin foil looking metallics and softer metallics that have a satin-like quality.
HOW TO WEAR:
For the love of God, please just pick something that suits your skin-tone! It’s a similar concept to wearing lipsticks and trying to find your perfect nude. For metallics, if you’re an olive skin tone (like me) and possibly if you’re warm toned overall, avoid silver metallics and if you’re cool toned, avoid that gold-digger true, 24K gold! If you’re warm toned, for for warm metallics; if you’re cool toned, go for cool metallics. There aren’t too many rules here otherwise, just make it chic.

8. CROCHET & CROCHET INSPIRED.

No, not the stereotypical grandma type but a chic version like the pieces in the shop this trend section below.
HOW TO WEAR:
Some pieces this season seem to have forgotten what underlining is so ensure you know where the crotchet holes appear on your body once on and wear nude undies accordingly! Avoid pieces that have cut outs on top of the crotchet cut outs (say a dress that has two triangular cut outs at the waist). For a more sophisticated, elegant look, choose designs that have a subtle crotchet in one localised area such as around the bottom rim of the dress.

9. CROP TOPS.

Making another round this year, the favourite crop tops of this season seem to be cropped T-shirts, bralette-shaped, and off-the-shoulder crop tops although cropped vests and polo necks are still in.
HOW TO WEAR:
You can literally wear these however you like; casual to dressy, jeans to skirts. Cropped tops are incredibly versatile so invest in a few! Channel your inner Rihanna in “Wild Thoughts”.
